Skin Lump
Cyst Removal in GP Clinic
Why Remove a Skin Lump or Cyst?
Skin lumps are common and often harmless, but some can cause pain, discomfort, infection, or cosmetic concern. The most common types include sebaceous cysts, lipomas (fat lumps), and skin tags.
In many cases, removal is recommended not only for comfort, but also to send the lump for laboratory testing (checking under the microscope). This confirms exactly what the lump is, and helps make sure it is not cancerous.
At Paddington Medical Clinic, we perform lump removal procedures in our in our dedicated operating room, using sterile technique and hospital-grade instruments for your safety.
When Should You See a Doctor About a Lump?
Warning signs that need attention
- A lump that is growing in size
- A lump that becomes painful, red, or swollen
- A cyst that keeps getting infected
Not all lumps are dangerous, but if you are unsure, it is always best to have them assessed by a doctor.

How We Remove Skin Lumps and Cysts in Our Clinic
Step-by-step procedure
- Assessment – the lump is examined to confirm if removal is appropriate.
- Local anaesthesia – numbing injection so the procedure is comfortable.
- Small incision – the lump or cyst is carefully excised.
- Closure – the wound is stitched with fine sutures (often absorbable).
- Sterile dressing – applied to protect the wound.
- Laboratory testing – in many cases, the removed lump is sent to a lab to be checked under the microscope. This confirms the diagnosis and ensures it is not cancerous
All procedures are carried out in our dedicated operating room, equipped with surgical lighting, sterile drapes, and hospital-grade instruments. Most procedures take 30–45 minutes, and patients go home the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is skin lump or cyst removal painful?
No. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain. Only a brief sting from the numbing injection is felt, and after that the procedure is comfortable.
Do I need to be admitted to hospital for lump removal?
Not usually. Most cysts and lipomas can be safely removed in a GP clinic’s operating room. Only very large or complex lumps may need hospital care.
Will my lump be sent for testing?
In many cases, yes. The removed lump can be sent to a laboratory to be checked under the microscope. This confirms the exact diagnosis and ensures it is not cancerous, such as skin cancer.
We usually share the results with you at your POD 7 follow-up visit, so you have clarity and peace of mind within a week.
How long does it take to heal?
Most wounds heal in about 10–14 days. Our follow-up reviews at POD 3, POD 7, and POD 14
ensure safe recovery. By POD 7, you will also have your lab results reviewed with the doctor.
Will the lump come back?
If the entire lump and capsule are removed, recurrence is uncommon. Some types of lumps can form again over time. Our doctors will explain this and advise on further steps if needed.
