Frequently Asked Questions About GP Clinics in Singapore

GP clinic means – General Practice. This means that the doctors working in the clinic, General Practitioners (GP) or Family Physicians. GPs and Family Physicians are armed with the breadth of knowledge to tackle every day health issues that you may face. More importantly, the doctors in the clinic should focus on preventing medical problems from arising, such as through the use of vaccinations, good diet and exercise advice tailored specially for you.

GP refers to a General Practitioner while FP refers to Family Physician. Both are generalists and can serve their local community for common medical ailments. Family Physicians have additional training through post-graduate part-time courses like the Graduate Diploma of Family Medicine (GDFM) and they can further their professional development through a fellowship with the College of Family Physicians Singapore (CPFS). Some GPs choose to further their post-graduate education with special interests in Geriatric Care or Dermatology, depending on their specific clinical interests.

Polyclinics are run by the national healthcare system and are broadly structured into a few groups like Singhealth, National Healthcare Group, National University Hospital Group. Doctors (GPs and Family Physicians) working in Polyclinic have the breadth of knowledge.

GP Clinics are run privately by doctors (GPs and Family Physicians) in the private sector, catering to different populations in Singapore. The experience of private GPs and Family Physicians also varies from clinic to clinic, so it would be best for you to find a clinic or doctor that you trust, either in public polyclinics or private GP, so as to optimise health outcomes for you!

GPs and Family Physicians are armed with the breadth of knowledge to tackle every day health issues that you may face. Family Physicians in Singapore have completed further training in Family Medicine and have a formal Diploma in Family Medicine as a testament to their accomplishments. General Practitioners may also have completed other post graduate courses in Geriatrics, Sports Medicine, Occupational Medicine, Mental Health and many others, to add to their arsenal of skills to provide the best broad based care for you.

Some common procedures a GP can do include health screening, blood taking, treatment of burns, removal of stuck objects, and in certain cases, also help with stitching up cuts, ingrown toenail removal, drainage of small pus collections and removal of superficial skin lumps. See more about minor surgical procedures in GP clinics here.

This is actually a personal choice. Primary Care Doctors like General Practitioners (GP) or Family Physicians are actually well equipped and trained to manage most common conditions like flu, diarrhoea, cough and colds for most children. However, for more complex cases, GPs and Family Physicians will still refer patients to a Paediatrician for assistance in management.

The advantage of seeing a trusted GP or Family Physician is that your doctor will know the intricacies and nuances of your baby or child and the rapport and good relationship built up over time will translate into better health outcomes for your child and yourself. See more about our Children’s Services here.

It is all up to you. You may be comfortable with your current gynaecologist but you are probably looking for a trusted doctor nearby your house to get your PAP smears and breast checks done. You may also be looking for a lady doctor due to personal choices, who can help you with your PAP smears. It is precisely because of this, a lady GP doctor or family physician may be more appropriate to do your lady health checks. However, for more complicated cases, your GP may still refer you to a gynaecologist. See more about our Women’s Health Services here.

Why not? Actually most health screenings should be done with your trusted doctor. Your trusted doctor will advise you on health screening modalities that is appropriate for your age, health and current medical condition. Instead of you picking out from a buffet menu of health screenings that is hard to understand, talking to your trusted doctor about health and screening appropriately based on national guidelines will serve you better in the long run. See more of our General Services and Health Screening Packages here.

This actually depends on your medical condition and what your doctor advises you. But for most people, an annual health check up with your trusted doctor should be appropriate.

Yes! But it actually depends on what vaccinations the GP clinic stocks. Clinic vaccines stock vary from time to time and from clinic to clinic, so it would be best for you to contact the clinic directly first to enquire what vaccinations are appropriate for you.

Clinic consultation charges vary from clinic to clinic. Usually this consultation charge does not include charges for clinical tests, surgical procedures, and medications. The clinic charges should be clearly displayed at the front of the clinic during registration. Furthermore, all charges should be explained to you before any tests or procedures are done. Medication charges should also be explained to you before finalisation of the bill.

In our clinic, the consultation charge ranges from $25 to $35. Paddington Medical aims to keep healthcare costs affordable whilst at the same time, giving you the personalised care you deserve.

Different clinics have different policies regarding these cards. However, in Paddington Medical Clinic, to assist patients to with the medical costs, we accept the use of CHAS / PG / MG / Medisave and Baby Bonus cards to apply for subsidies for you appropriate for your medical condition.

Do note that final approval of CHAS / PG / MG / Medisave / Baby Bonus subsidies lie with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and other relevant government institutions, and sometimes despite our best efforts, certain subsidies, treatments and relevant appointments may not be subsidized to your satisfaction. We seek your kind understanding should this occur.
